According Pew Research Center’s March 13, 2013 study on teens’ mobile consumption, the amount of teenagers with cell phones is on the rise as is their time spent connected to the internet via mobile. These increases impact the value of the root of all mobile connectivity: cell towers. The Pew Research Center’s Teens and Technology study indicates that 78% of all teens now have a cell phone, and almost haalf of those own a smartphone. In 2011, 23% of all teens carried smartphones—now that has grown to 37% to date. A large majority (74% of teens) indicated they occasionally use their phones as a medium to connect to the internet while 25% are “cell-mostly” internet users.

According to the study, teens “represent the leading edge of mobile connectivity and the patterns of their technology use often signal future changes in the adult population.” To accommodate such growth in wireless consumption, there needs to be enough infrastructure [cell towers] to facilitate the mobile connectivity. Implementing simple supply and demand economics illustrates the value of a cell tower, the cell tower lease associated with it, and the land used to house the tower all increases with the demand for mobile connectivity.

“Property owners allowing companies to lease their land for cell tower placement often do not realize how extremely valuable their land is, especially with the constant growth in mobile consumption, wireless technology advances and network expansions,” says Hugh Odom, President and Founder of Vertical Consultants, a Nashville, Tennessee based telecom consulting firm. “Vertical Consultants’ mission is to level the playing field between property owners and their telecom tenants and our success to date is giving merit to that mission.”

In 2012 alone, Vertical Consultants recovered over 100 years’ worth of unpaid cell tower rent and expenses for their clients while increasing cell tower rents by an average of 142%. Vertical Consultants prides itself on being the only true landowner advocate and supports this assertion by providing a plethora of free services to benefit all property owners leasing land to telecom companies or cell tower developers.
