Record Investments in Mobile Affect Cell Tower Landlords

Vertical Consultants reveals how the rise in mobile venture capital investments affects cell tower property owners across the U.S.

Mobile venture capital investments have reached a record 4 billion dollars in the first half of 2012, according to Rutberg and Co., a boutique investment bank. Due to the high popularity of smartphones, tablets and feature phones, and correlating applications, investments in consumer apps alone make up more than 25% of total investments or 1.009 billion dollars. Venture capital firms have capitalized on the demand for apps, devices, mobile video, and mobile advertising among others, by investing in 479 mobile startups this year.

Although investments in consumer applications are growing at a rapid pace, the most valuable investments remain in the non-software, capital-intensive areas like cell tower infrastructure, according to Rutberg and Co. Validating the investment bank’s assertion, telecoms and tower developer’s second quarter reports indicated record profits and, for some, higher than anticipated site rental revenues.

These companies’ profit margins are on the rise and cell tower landlords are often not privy to this information. Implementing supply and demand economics would allow property owners to be paid full and fair value for telecoms and tower developers’ use of their land. As demand for mobile connectivity rises [subsequently increasing cell towers’ revenue] the value of property owners’ cell tower leases and the land used for telecom purposes also rises.
