San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) August 8, 2006
Parrot Cellular, an exclusive agent for Cingular Wireless which operates more than 85 retail outlets throughout Northern California, announced today it will partner with RecycleForUS.com to collect used cellular phones at all its locations throughout the state.
RecycleforUS.com, an industry-funded nationwide initiative will return funds generated from the sale of handsets which still have a re-marketable value to Parrot Cellular, who has committed to donating a substantial portion of the funds raised to support local elementary schools. Phones which are not re-marketable will be donated to the 911 Cell Phone Bank which provides emergency cell phones to the elderly and victims of abuse, or will be recycled in an environmentally responsible manner.
"We're very excited about this program," said Matt Fidiam, Parrot Cellular's CEO. “This is a win/win for everyone concerned. Our customers have a responsible outlet for their old cell phones, and the environment, local schools and people who cannot otherwise afford a cell phone all come out ahead in this endeavor.”
Conrad Melancon, president of RMS Communications Group which developed the RecycleforUS.com initiative said there are more that 500 million used cellular phones in the U.S., with 130 million more being replaced each year.
"This cellular phone collection program will help raise money for use in numerous communities in California as well as help keep hazardous materials out of our landfills," Melancon said. "Many of these cellular phones will be sent oversees to countries where a cellular phone may be the only means of long distance communications. Others will be used to provide emergency communications to the elderly and victims of abuse."
All cell phones will be accepted under the program. Phones should be deactivated and personal information should be removed prior to being turned in at any Parrot Cellular location.
