MCHENRY – Many active teenagers do not show symptoms of heart abnormalities yet may be at risk for cardiac arrest or even death. Many cases of sudden cardiac death in teenagers, especially ages 13 to 18 years old, can be prevented with a proper heart screening.
Centegra Health System in northern Illinois now offers echocardiogram (ECHO) heart screenings designed for teens ages 13 to 18. These screenings will take place at the Centegra Primary Care locations on the Centegra Wellness on the Move mobile health unit for $85 throughout the summer on the following dates:
4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 5 at Centegra Primary Care, Crystal Lake
4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 12 at Centegra Primary Care, Spring Grove
11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 16 at Centegra Primary Care, Huntley
4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 19 at Centegra Primary Care, Woodstock
4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3 at Centegra Primary Care, Huntley
4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4 at Centegra Primary Care, Woodstock.
4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9 at Centegra Primary Care, Spring Grove
4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10 at Centegra Primary Care, Crystal Lake
“An ECHO heart screening is an ultrasound of the heart and can help detect heart defects and abnormalities, even when no symptoms are present. These screenings can prevent the sudden death of teenage athletes, which has been prevalent across the country lately,” said Dr. R. David Halstead, pediatric cardiologist with Centegra Primary Care-McHenry.
ECHO heart screening requirements include completion of the pre-screening questionnaire, parental or guardian consent and presence of a parent or guardian at the screening. All necessary forms can be found at centegra.org/echo. Bring the pre-screening questionnaire to the appointment. Comfortable clothing should be worn for the screening.
Centegra’s echocardiography labs are accredited by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission and recognized for their commitment to high-quality patient care and diagnostic testing.
