Rehabmart.com, an online e-commerce company that sells rehabilitation and medical supplies, has joined into a distribution partnership with SPIO, Incorporated, to offer pediatric compression garment systems to a larger consumer market. SPIO™ is owned by Dynamic Family Services, a consortium of nonprofit organizations that are combining their expertise, care and resources to help children with special needs to reach their full potential. Besides SPIO™, members of this consortium include the Children's Therapy Center, Dynamic Orthotics and the South King Early Intervention Program. SPIO™ directs 100% of its profits back to Dynamic Family Services to help enrich the lives of children with special needs, and to provide them with the resources they need to fulfill their capabilities.
SPIO™ stands for Stabilizing Pressure Input Orthosis, a deep compression system that assists patients with stability and proprioceptive deficits. Designed by Cheryl Allen, a mother of two children with severe sensory, movement and tone processing disorders, and Nancy Hylton, Licensed Orthotist, Physical Therapist and the mother of a child with cerebral palsy, creating SPIO™ was a labor of love. While the earliest flexible compression bracing began in the mid-80s, it wasn't until 1994 that deeper exploration of this therapeutic tool actually started happening. Allen began her quest to find a material that could 'mimic' the deep pressure sensory information that Hylton was providing through her hands to Allen's son, Brian.
After a few early attempts, Allen began making Lycra compression shorts that significantly improved her son's ability to control movement and to bear weight through his trunk and lower extremities. Allen's second son, Ian, suffered with early sensory-motor difficulties and began receiving physical therapy with Hylton when he was just 3 months old. After Hylton found some success experimenting with a four inch wide wrap in specific areas of the body, Allen went home and fabricated him a Lycra body suit to duplicate the wrap. Within a week, Ian was rocking on his hands and knees and crawling reciprocally, and was less easily over-stimulated by environmental noises and began to explore his surroundings in a much more meaningful and secure manner.
SPIO™ is a compression system designed to help children with special needs including sensory processing disorders, autism, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome and other neuromuscular delays, and is created with a patented Lycra fabric that features a unique multi-directional stretch. Protected under U.S. Patents #5782790 and #5957873, SPIO™ systems are also registered with the FDA as a Class 1 Medical Device. “We are very proud to offer the SPIO™ pediatric compression garment systems to more consumers,” said Hulet Smith, Founder and CEO of Rehabmart. “These discrete garments are very comfortable in all types of weather due to the wicking feature of the lightweight and breathable Lycra fabric, and there is no 'break-in' period...which means that your child can begin wearing the SPIO™ all day long from the moment it arrives. You may find that your child never wants to take it off at all!”
