Certiport Inducts Southwestern Michigan College Dean into Champions
of Digital Literacy Hall of Fame
Amid stagnant economy, Brian Leonard heads initiative to prepare
SMC students to compete globally for 21st
Century jobs by enhancing and certifying digital skills
WAIKOLOA, Hawaii (Business Wire EON/PRWEB ) August 3, 2008 --
Certiport today inducted Brian Leonard, dean of academic development and
assessment at Southwestern Michigan College (SMC), into the Champions of
Digital Literacy Hall of Fame during a gala ceremony at the Certiport
PATHWAYS™ HAWAII international conference.
Leonard was one of six individuals from around the world honored for his
outstanding contributions to ensure SMC’s
3,000 students and 300 full-time faculty and staff develop critical
computing skills that meet globally recognized standards. Since March
2007, the college has required that every student achieve Certiport
Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³®)
as a requirement to graduate. Faculty and staff are expected to earn IC³
by 2009.
“In today's global marketplace, it's become
imperative that individuals have a foundation of computer literacy to be
successful,” Leonard said. “What
IC³ provides us is a validation that our
curriculum is aligned with industry standards not only on a local level,
but on a national and global level.”
