Brooklyn 8th graders from Kings Collegiate Charter School recently topped off their San Francisco visit with an unforgettable cruise around the San Francisco Bay.

The California Spirit is perfect for any formal or casual event of up to 149 guests.

This charter school was giving children an opportunity to overcome adversity and to better their lives. When I initially spoke to them about this adventure, it reminded me of my humble beginnings and I really wanted to give something back.

Students from Kings Collegiate Charter School, a Brooklyn middle school dedicated to preparing kids for college, recently took a journey across the country to check out the San Francisco Bay Area. Students who met academic and behavioral goals over the past year were rewarded with the trip, which included visits to tourist attractions like Fisherman’s Wharf and the Exploratorium, as well as tours of UC Berkeley and Stanford. On their final night in the city, they chose to go out in style with a dinner cruise from Yacht Connections International (YCI), aboard the elegant 100’ California Spirit yacht.

Christie Chow, Director of Operations for Kings Collegiate, says the group chose to book a cruise with Yacht Connections International because of the extra level of interest and attention they offered. “They were incredibly friendly and seemed genuinely interested in our group. Also, they were able to work with us regarding pricing which is super important when you have a tight budget.”

“My family and I came to this country from El Salvador with very little to look for a better life. If you worked hard and did not give up, you could achieve your dream. My parents made many sacrifices and my brother and I started working when we were 11 and 12 years old to help the family,” explained YCI owner Marti McMahon. “This charter school was giving children an opportunity to overcome adversity and to better their lives. When I initially spoke to them about this adventure, it reminded me of my humble beginnings and I really wanted to give something back.”

The group of 48 students and 5 chaperones boarded their private dinner cruise at Pier 40, next to AT&T Ballpark, and set off on a two-hour adventure around the incomparable San Francisco Bay. The group hadn’t expected much more than a basic cruise ferry, so everyone was amazed with the elegance and sleek design of the California Spirit. “None of us realized that it was actually going to be a yacht and how nice it really was. It truly felt like a private party,” said Chow. “When I walked on board, I knew that the rate they gave us had to be incredibly low for what they could charge.”

Kids and grownups alike basked in the luxurious experience of the California Spirit’s leisurely tour of the Bay, relaxing on the spacious decks as they floated by Alcatraz, Angel Island, the Racoon Straight, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

For dinner, the group enjoyed an Italian menu made on board by the yacht’s chef, which included the Traditional Caesar Salad, Pasta Primavera with Garden Vegetables, San Francisco Sourdough Bread, and soft drinks.

The beautiful yacht, incredible sights, and delicious dinner were unforgettable, but it was the service that really set the experience apart. Chow remarked that “the staff was incredibly warm and friendly even though they were in the midst of 50 8th graders whom I sure wasn’t the normal clientele.”

“We select the finest crew that loves to share the Bay,” said Marti. “The crew so enjoyed working on this cruise. It made everyone feel good.”

The cruise was the perfect ending to a whirlwind adventure. As one 8th grader tweeted from the yacht, "This is the best. Trip. Ever!"
