Insurance is an expensive proposition. With just the minimum state requirements, drivers can easily spend thousands every year, putting a significant strain on wallets already making dollars stretch as much as possible. However, it doesn't have to be this way. Rate Digest has announced three great tips on how to get cheap car insurance and save hundreds- reducing their bill by half, even.
The first thing Rate Digest recommends drivers do is take a serious look at their policy. It can be a very confusing document, riddled with terms that do not make any sense outside of the insurance industry.
Gaining a little knowledge of those terms can really help, however. According to Rate Digest drivers would do well to look out for pieces of their policy they don't need. Many insurance companies offer roadside assistance through companies like AAA or OnStar as part of the bill. In many cases, though, such plans are redundant to drivers- many credit card companies offer free roadside assistance to card holders with “gold” or higher cards, making additional coverage through the insurance company a waste of money.
Drivers who use a car that is over ten years old should consider getting cheap car insurance by increasing the deductable on their collision coverage, according to Rate Digest. When an older car is engaged in an accident, chances are good that the car will not be worth repairing- in this case, the car is “totaled”. The driver is then given a settlement, based on the value of the car before the accident. As this is frequently the case with older cars, drivers might be wise to increase their deductible, which will lower their monthly bill and gain them cheap car insurance.
Another method of attaining cheap car insurance is to consider getting storage insurance on a car that is used only seasonally, such as cars taken to auto shows. In this way, drivers don't need to fully insure the car, but it will be protected against vandalism, theft, or other damage. True, drivers won't be able to pull it out and take it for a spin on any given day, but it will be protected and will also help get cheap car insurance for the driver.
