Unless students are writing term papers in ancient Mandarin or Sanskrit, every collegian will utilize English grammar at some point in the semester. That’s why even stellar literature students often need a quintessential guide to reference obscure rules.
“If there’s a leader in the field, it’s definitely the Blue Book,” said Steven Kennedy, founder of Texbooks.org, a website that helps students find the best prices on college textbooks.
The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation has been bestseller for more than two decades. It was created by Jane Straus after she was asked to teach a grammar course for state employees in California but couldn’t find a satisfactory text at the local library to explain grammar rules to her students. So she began piecing together her lesson plans to eventually write The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation, which has since been endorsed by a variety of organizations, including BBC World. The book’s website provides additional resources for writers, such as English usage videos and free quizzes.
Middle school is the place most students first learned those pesky grammar rules. Unfortunately, the seventh grade is one awkward year many students have purposely forgotten. However, students should not be embarrassed if they have to buy this next book to get them through the parenthetical blues. Barron's Painless Series publishes Barron’s Painless Grammar. Although it’s geared toward middle school students, many adults have found it a refreshing reminder that they probably never really learned the rules the first time.
Geraldine Woods, who has made a career in preparing students for standardized exams, penned English Grammar for Dummies. The book provides tear-out sheets and Top 10 lists as much appreciated alternatives to detested grammar diagramming. If students are not looking for a book to read from cover-to-cover, this book gives the reader the ability to quickly thumb to grammar topics of their choice.
The website helps students compare prices on cheap textbooks from 45+ booksellers with one simple search, saving time and money during a period of life when both are seriously lacking.
