Global challenges facing the world create promising new opportunities for today’s chemists, said DuPont Senior Vice President and Chief Science & Technology Officer Uma Chowdhry at the American Chemical Society Presidential Symposium.
“There has never been a more promising time for chemists as industry transitions to serve a new global economy,” Chowdhry said. “The opportunities from the range of challenges facing us today create a need for chemists and chemical engineers in industry to develop innovative solutions to issues of climate change and alternate energy, personal security, and a sustainable, safe food supply. To address such mega challenges, college graduates require not only scientific and technical depth in a specific area but general knowledge of several scientific areas. Skills for collaboration and adaptability, guided by a strong moral compass, will be essential for success in this global society.
“At DuPont, our scientists are focused on the megatrends created by global population growth and rising expectations of the middle class in emerging economies,” Chowdhry said. “Today, more than 8,500 DuPont scientists and engineers in every corner of the world are collaborating with customers and partners in addressing complex challenges that will define the coming decades. From production agriculture and climate change to alternate energy and security, our chemists and engineers work in multidisciplinary teams to create novel solutions for the needs of the developing and developed world. The integration of scientific and engineering capabilities that differentiates our innovation engine is the foundation for DuPont as it continues to drive growth for a better, safer, more sustainable life for people around the world.”
