Many people with all kinds of cancer are interested in trying anything that may help them, including alternative medicine to deal with cancer treatments. Acupuncture treatment in particular, reduces nausea, vomiting and pain caused by chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Continuous studies by the National Cancer Institute suggests not only does acupuncture help with the side effects with chemo and radiation, it also may boost the immune system response.

1) What type of Cancer do you have?
    Lymphoma

2) What treatment are you getting from your oncologist?
Chemotherapy

3) How often do you get acupuncture?
Two to three times a week

4) Do you get acupuncture before your Chemotherapy treatments?
Yes. Before, after and sometimes in between if I don't feel so good.

5) How is your pain level and side effects of the chemotherapy?
Very moderate

6) Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Yes. I have had to have acupuncture between treatments if I feel bad and they have been nice enough to squeeze me in every time. The difference after an acupuncture treatment is significant. That's why I referred my mother there. I believe it’s effective.

Rosio has been getting acupuncture at one of the 3 ARC Acupuncture and Physical Therapy offices in Volusia County.

The problem is all the traditional cancer therapies are difficult for the body to recover. Chemotherapy side effects, especially nausea, can occur in different degrees. It not only kills cancer cells, but also kills normal cells. The production of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelet cells are inhibited by the chemo, thus the risks of infection is increased and the side effects below are associated with the treatments.

  •     pain,
  •     fatigue,
  •     dizziness,
  •     vomiting,
  •     hair loss,
  •     rashes,
  •     low immune,
  •     insomnia,
  •     hot flashes,
  •     diarrhea,
  •     constipation,
  •     anxiety,
  •     depression,
  •     dry mouth,

Since chemotherapy and radiation therapy weaken the body's immune system, a strict clean needle technique must be incorporated when acupuncture treatment is given to Cancer patients. It is imperative to seek treatment from a qualified acupuncture physician who uses sterilized and disposable needles only.
