Illinois medical malpractice lawyer Patrick A. Salvi says National Birth Defects Prevention Month should serve as a valuable reminder that children continue to suffer from cerebral palsy and other birth defects as the result of medical mistakes that could have been avoided.
“I applaud efforts to raise awareness about birth defects and to educate the public about what causes conditions such as cerebral palsy,” Salvi says. “Ultimately, this awareness helps the public to understand how, in many cases, these conditions could have been prevented if medical professionals had exercised the level of care that is expected of them.”
Salvi is the managing equity partner of Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P.C., a leading Illinois personal injury law firm with offices in Chicago and Waukegan.
The firm recently launched a website, MedicalMalpractice-Information.com, to serve as a resource for comprehensive information regarding medical malpractice and healthcare negligence in Illinois. The site features extensive discussion of cerebral palsy and other common birth injuries, including Erb’s palsy, brachial plexus and shoulder dystocia.
Cerebral palsy is a condition that impacts one out of every 303 children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is the most common cause of motor disability in childhood.
One of the main causes of cerebral palsy is the lack of adequate blood flow or oxygen to the brain. This often is traced to mistakes by doctors or nurses during labor and delivery, Salvi says.
“We have identified many instances in which human error has contributed to the onset of this serious birth defect, including failure to accurately read fetal monitoring equipment or diagnose fetal distress, waiting too long to perform a C-section or administering too much Pitocin,” Salvi says. “These are mistakes that carry a lifetime of consequences for children and families.”
In addition to raising awareness, Salvi says National Birth Defects Prevention Month should also serve as a time to support and extend appreciation to those who are working diligently to research and provide treatment for cerebral palsy and other common birth defects.
“It’s important to remember that children suffering from cerebral palsy will need medical attention for the rest of their lives,” Salvi says.
