In 2011, driven by the skyrocketing market prices of major rare earth raw materials such as praseodymium and neodymium, NdFeB material price soared accordingly, in particular, N35 Sintered NdFeB in China once touched historical high of RMB628/kg in mid-July, which, in spite of a downward mobility in the second half year, still towered over the level at the outset of the year.
Against such backdrop, the investment has increased substantially in Chinese NdFeB industry; apart from the traditional Ningbo, Shanxi and Beijing-Tianjin regions, Baotou, Ganzhou and other key production areas of rare earth also have witnessed rapid growth in NdFeB capacity, with the scale of industry capacity reaching 300,000 tons, while a majority of new capacity projects still have not been put into production. In 2011, China’s NdFeB output reached 83,000 tons, nearly the same as that in previous year, and still giving priority to sintered NdFeB products.
In 2011, Under the price hiking of rare earth raw materials, major NdFeB manufacturers represented by Beijing Zhong Ke San Huan Hi-Tech Co.,Ltd., Ningbo Yunsheng (Group) Co., Ltd. and Yantai Zhenghai Magnetic Material Co., Ltd. (ZHmag) showed strong bargaining power by successfully transferring the cost pressure to downstream clients, thus achieving performance enhancement by a large margin.
Beijing Zhong Ke San Huan Hi-Tech Co.,Ltd. is the largest NdFeB material manufacturer in China, with total capacity of sintered NdFeB and bonded NdFeB up to 12,000 tons in 2011. Currently, the company is committed to capacity expansion of high-performance NdFeB materials in new energy vehicles, energy-efficient appliances, wind power generation, etc.. Once the three high-performance NdFeB production projects in Beijing, Tianjin and Ningbo are completed, its comprehensive productivity will be 18,000 tons.
As one of China’s uppermost high-performance NdFeB material suppliers, ZHmag enjoys a stronger competitive edge in markets like high-performance NdFeB materials for wind turbines, inverter air-conditioners, etc.. In 2011, the IPO raised funds were primarily thrown into two high-performance NdFeB material capacity expansion projects, which, once fulfilled, would raise ZHmag’s NdFeB capacity to 5,500 tons from the present 3,500 tons. In December 27, 2011, Chinese Ministry of Commerce released the first export quota of rare earth of China in 2012. The gross reaches 10,546 tons, accounting for about 80% of the quota of the whole year. Among it, there are 9,095 tons of light rare earth and 1,415 tons of medium-heavy rare earth. At the same time, Chinese Ministry of Commerce also classifies and regulates light rare earth and medium-heavy rare earth for the first time, in other words, it makes a specific quantity provision for the light rare earth and medium-heavy rare earth for export: export quota of medium-heavy rare earth in the whole year of 2012 is 3,582.5 tons, covering nominated enterprises and enterprises under verification.
The practice of particular quota for medium-heavy rare earth will finally make the kind of rare earth get scarcer. Light rare earth is the relatively common one, which is the sub-product in the production process of medium-heavy rare earth; while medium-heavy rare earth is even scarcer, which is the indispensable raw material for some professional technological purposes.
