However, there is faster economic growth occuring in China's small and medium-sized cities, and an increase in the number of regional airports will drive the development of the Airport industry in China over the next five years.

As many small and medium cities in China are still inaccessible by air transport, industry growth will stem from an increase in the number of regional airports.

The Airport industry in China has changed significantly over the past five years. The snow disaster in southern China, a devastating earthquake in Sichuan province, stricter security checks due to the Beijing Olympic Games, terrorist fears, and the global recession all resulted in considerable challenges to air transportation. However, the Olympics, the Shanghai Expo and the Guangzhou Asian Games all created huge demand for air transport. Cultural exchange campaigns between China and other countries also contributed to revenue growth. In the five years through 2012, revenue for the Airport industry in China has been growing almost 10% per year on average, IBISWorld reports.

The four major players in the Airport industry are estimated to account for a combined market share of 40.7% in 2012. These companies operate the five busiest airports in China: Beijing Capital International Airport, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, and Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport.

IBISWorld research indicates that there is significant growth potential for the industry, as flights per capita in China are much lower than in developed economies. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) is aiming to increase the total number of airports in China to 244 by 2020. As many small and medium cities in China are still inaccessible by air transport, the number of regional airports, in particular, is forecast to grow over the next five years. Due to slower growth of large cities in China, more airports in these small and medium cities will contribute to faster growth in air traffic volumes.
