Scientologists Take Action to Counter the Russian Heroin Crisis

Volunteers from the Church of Scientology of Moscow engage in drug prevention to combat drug abuse and addiction.

Moscow Scientologists distribute thousands of copies of The Truth About Drugs booklets, which present a comprehensive overview of the facts about drugs and drug abuse.

Church of Scientology Moscow volunteers are committed to resolving this crisis by reaching youth before they begin to experiment with drugs.

Some 6 percent of the Russian population is addicted to drugs, Russia’s Federal Drug Control Service (FSNK) announced in September 2013. The report states that 90 percent of Russia’s 8.5 million addicts are addicted to heroin—more heroin addicts per capita than in any other country. Some 30-40,000 Russians die each year of drug-related illnesses.

Church of Scientology Moscow volunteers are committed to resolving this crisis by reaching youth before they begin to experiment with drugs.

Each week, volunteers carry out drug prevention events. They devise creative and interesting activities to reach youth with their anti-drug message—street theater, sporting events, and displays such as the “Drug-Free Tree of Life” booth October 5, where youth were invited to sign their names on the leaves of the tree as their pledge that they will live drug-free lives.

Scientologists on five continents work in their communities throughout the year to empower others with the truth about drugs. The Church and its members are dedicated to eradicating drug abuse through education.

The Church of Scientology supports The Truth About Drugs initiative, one of the world’s largest nongovernmental drug education and prevention campaigns.

It has been conclusively proven that when young people are provided with the truth about drugs—factual information on what drugs are and what they do—usage rates drop commensurately.
