Zack Barangan Teaches Smokers About The Cigar Testing Process

Testers get very analytical about every detail of the cigar being inspected. The process really requires concentration; and accordingly, it’s a responsibility given to the most seasoned and knowledgeable workers in the factory.

The all-new Cigar Advisor Magazine is an online cigar magazine that brings a fresh, irreverent, and down-to-earth perspective on all things cigars to thousands of smokers. In addition to educational cigar content and behind-the-scenes cigar industry articles from some of the business’s top names, Cigar Advisor delivers an array of content about a variety of topics of interest to people who enjoy the cigar lifestyle. The magazine also features cigar reviews and ratings submitted by real smokers. Cigar Advisor contributor Zack Barangan has written “Making the Grade,” a new article on the tobacco taste testing processes at a cigar factory.

Barangan takes readers on a virtual trip to Tabacalera de Garcia, a cigar factory located in La Romana, Dominican Republic. Factory cigar tastings are conducted to ensure that the cigars meet certain standards of draw, combustion, taste, aroma and body, according to Zack, as this process is a quality control standard used in production at almost every factory. However, “things are done a little differently at TdeG,” he writes. “Here, the testing includes the Grupo de Maestros - a renowned group of cigar experts – as well as another 50 people, selected from every team that works in the factory.” Barangan attributes this variety of viewpoints to informing the manufacturers about the general flavors and other qualities of the tobacco blend.

While most cigar enthusiasts think that cigar testing might be a dream job, Zack writes that it’s not as glamorous as one might think. “Testers get very analytical about every detail of the cigar being inspected,” he says. “The process really requires concentration; and accordingly, it’s a responsibility given to the most seasoned and knowledgeable workers in the factory.” He completes the article by discussing some of their techniques, and the tools used during the test.
