WWF Praises White House Announcement Of Copenhagen Targets, Calls On President To Attend Summit
Climate Bill Must Pass Senate “This Winter” Before Midterm Elections Prohibit Chance of Passage in 2010
Washington, DC (Vocus/PRWEB ) November 24, 2009 -- World Wildlife Fund today issued the following statement from Keya Chatterjee, acting director of WWF’s climate program, following the announcement by the White House that they will offer an emissions reduction target during next month’s climate negotiations in Copenhagen:
“It is great news that the President will put forward an emissions reduction target in Copenhagen. Today’s announcement, while necessary, is far from sufficient. For the negotiations to succeed we will also need a signal of the level of financial support available in the long-term for poor and vulnerable countries that are suffering from the impacts of climate change and those that aspire to contribute more to the clean energy economy.
“Fundamentally, we will know the President is truly committed to addressing climate change if he personally attends next month’s negotiations and pledges to make climate change his next priority, immediately following healthcare. Climate change must be taken up by the Senate this winter. Otherwise, the window of opportunity before the approaching midterm elections will close.”
