"This release of OpenClinica builds on the software's strengths and includes a series of new features requested by our users," said Paul Galvin, Development Manager at Akaza Research, the firm that distributes and supports OpenClinica. Some of the system improvements include source data verification tools, task-oriented navigation, study dashboards, and a web services API.

"In addition to adding features we have significantly improved the application's performance," added Galvin. "For example, users will notice an order of magnitude improvement in application speed for studies with over 10,000 subjects and over 1 million data points."

As open source software, OpenClinica is free for organizations to use and modify. The software may be downloaded from http://svn.akazaresearch.com/OpenClinica-3.0-distros/. The files contain scripts to install OpenClinica using the Postgres and Oracle databases. There is also an upgrade available for users utilizing the Postgres database from 2.5.x to 3.0 for people that want to test with their existing data.

In addition, a public demonstration instance is available at http://demo2.openclinica.org/OpenClinica-3.0.

OpenClinica's worldwide community of users and developers have contributed substantially to this release. According to Galvin, OpenClinica 3.0 "vividly demonstrates how a dynamic open source community can produce enterprise-quality software, and we are grateful to our collaborators who contributed to this release. Their efforts will benefit all organizations and people using OpenClinica."
