This new feature gives our customers an added layer of security

NephoScale, a leading cloud services provider, is making cloud computing more secure with a new out-of-band VNC (Virtual Network Computing) Console Access for its Windows and Linux Cloud Servers. NephoScale’s VNC Console Access is the first to use reverse SSH (Secure Shell) tunneling, which allows users to securely transport data over an encrypted channel and manage a server from a remote location.

“When emergencies strike and users are unable to access their cloud server over a public or private networking interface, our VNC Console Access gives them a highly secure alternative method to log in,“ said NephoScale CEO Bruce Templeton. “This new feature hits on a critical need and gives our cloud server customers an added layer of security and the assurance that they can access their cloud servers when they absolutely need to.”

The VNC Console makes secure access to cloud servers possible, even if the network interfaces are misconfigured or a user is locked out due to improperly configured firewall rules. The VNC Console Access feature operates within the browser, so a Java client download is not required. Through the VNC Console, users can gain secure, out-of-band access to a virtual keyboard, video and mouse for both Windows and Linux operating systems. Console sessions are shared to allow for online collaboration when troubleshooting.

“Not only is NephoScale one of the few IaaS providers to offer a Javascript/HTML5 canvas VNC client, but we’re also the only public IaaS provider to make it possible for users to establish a VNC session over an out-of-band reverse SSH tunnel,” said Telemachus Luu, CTO of NephoScale. “We’ve made this feature very simple to use by eliminating the need for the customer to set up or configure their own VNC server, modify any firewall rules or set up a VPN server for authentication and encryption.”

Using the VNC Console Access’s reverse SSH tunneling capabilities, users can control their cloud server from a remote location, even if it sits behind a firewall or is subject to NAT (Network Address Translation). There are no access control lists once an SSH reverse tunnel has been established and authenticated, giving users full administrative privileges on the server.
