The CLS credential is designed to raise professional standards in the field of shopping center management, giving special recognition to those who demonstrate the highest level of competency in their specialty through professional experience and rigorous examination. “The recipients for this year’s CLS designation join a group of elite industry professionals performing at the top of their field and operating the most efficient shopping centers around the world,” said Michael Kercheval, ICSC’s president and CEO. “The shopping Center industry is constantly changing and these industry professionals have shown that they are up to the challenge,” Kercheval added.
Candidates qualify for the CLS designation by demonstrating at least four years of qualified work experience in center management, leasing negotiations or administration, retailing, merchandising, marketing or promotion, community relations, financing, purchasing insurance, security and law.
CLS certification is achieved through completion of a rigorous half-day written examination, developed according to strict psychometric standards of the certification examination industry, to demonstrate competence in four domains:
1. Asset Management/Property Management/Development/Leasing/Retailing
2. Risk Management/ Security/Insurance/Legal Considerations
3. People and Services
4. Lease Administration Accounting/Finance/Financial Reporting
ICSC established the CLS (Certified Leasing Specialist) credential in 1994 to advance professional standards in shopping center leasing worldwide, with the input of a governing committee of ICSC members and subject matter experts in Europe, North America and South America. ICSC professional certification programs give special recognition to global retail real estate professionals who demonstrate the highest level of competency in their specialty.
