May is National Foster Care Awareness month and the Central Missouri Foster Care and Adoption Association (CMFCAA) will spend the month honoring foster families, training foster parents, and raising awareness among the community.

Honoring Foster Families
CMFCAA and One Simple Wish are hosting a Foster Family Appreciation Day to be held at Memorial Baptist Church in Jefferson City, MO on Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. Attendance to the event was extended to foster families in Central Missouri and is by RSVP only.

The event will include toys and gifts for foster children, carnival games, bounce houses, lunch, face painting, door prizes and more. Sponsoring the event are: Boone County Children’s Division, Cole County Children’s Division, Merrell University, Missouri Alliance for Children and Families, National Guard, and Great Circle.

Shakespeare’s Pizza Fundraiser
Shakespeare’s Pizza will donate 15% of all proceeds to CMFCAA on Thursday, May 23, 2013. Patrons must present a flier at the time of purchase in order to redeem the 15% donation. All menu items are eligible, including take-out and the purchase of frozen pizzas to take home.

For a list of locations where fliers may be picked up or to print the flier, visit CMFCAA’s Facebook page: .

Swim Wear Drive
CMFCAA hosts a Big Surf day every year; this year’s Big Surf event will be held Saturday, June 22, 2013. Foster families receive a discounted ticket price and must purchase tickets online. For more information about purchasing tickets, call CMFCAA’s Resource Center at (573) 298-0258.

CMFCAA facilitates a clothing closet where foster families may find gently used items. However, they are not allowed to accept used swim wear.

“The need for swim wear is not a need people often identify with foster care”, says DeAnna Alonso, Executive Director of CMFCAA, “When these kids receive a gift, such as a new swim suit, it means a lot to them. They know someone thought about them, and it’s something they can call their own.”

StorageMart will collect new swim wear during the month of May at any self storage location in Columbia, MO or Jefferson City, MO. Swim wear may be dropped off during office hours. CMFCAA encourages donation of new swim wear in all sizes from infant to toddler to teen, for boys and girls.

Raising Awareness
CMFCAA is promoting National Foster Care Awareness month via the organization’s social media profiles. The organization has other local events planned throughout the month of May. To get more information, follow CMFCAA on Twitter (@CMFCAA) and Like them on Facebook
