According to U.S. News and World Report's national university rankings, more than 80% of the top 100 colleges on their list are private colleges. (They based their findings on average freshmen retention rates, graduation rates, and class sizes, among other criteria.)

Of course, for most parents today, the thought of shelling out $35,000, $45,000, or even $55,000 for just one year of college can cause more than a few sleepless nights.

Yet the “sticker price” at many elite private colleges is often just a starting point... and more than parents need to pay.
