Denver, CO (PRWEB) December 20, 2010

Bachus & Shanker, LLC, a Colorado personal injury law firm, has compiled a report showing a significant decrease in the number of alcohol-related fatalities in Colorado from 2005 to 2009. The firm is pleased to see a downward trend in alcohol-related traffic fatalities statewide, and hopes the reported findings will be a contributing factor in deterring anyone who might consider driving while intoxicated, especially during the holidays.

The report was compiled using statistics gathered by the Colorado Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The project was created to provide a visual representation of how Colorado counties are affected by alcohol-related traffic fatalities. Alcohol-related fatalities, accidents, and arrests are broken down in the report by county, and the findings are displayed on maps and easy-to-understand graphs.

According to the report:

  •     The deadliest county was Jefferson, with 84 alcohol-related traffic deaths, although this is a decrease from the last reported time period. Drunk-driving deaths in the county dropped by 67% from 2005 to 2009.
  •     Ten counties, including Chaffee, San Miguel, and Rio Grande, showed the greatest decrease in traffic fatality rates from 2008 to 2009, recording no deaths in 2009.
  •     During the same period, seven counties, including Fremont, Routt, and Denver, showed fatality rate increases of 29 to 200 percent.
  •     Costilla County had the highest alcohol-related fatality rate per 100,000 people in 2009, but because the county is sparsely populated, there were actually only three deaths.

Although Colorado has seen an a steady influx of residents, and the number of drunk driving deaths has gone up in many counties, the overall fatality rate in the state has continued to decrease since 2005.

"Because we represent clients who have suffered personal injuries, our firm is quite familiar with the devastation caused by drunk driving accidents," says Kyle Bachus, founding partner at Bachus & Schanker, LLC. "We're encouraged by the long-term decrease in alcohol-related traffic fatalities in Colorado, and we're hopeful the numbers will also continue to drop in the counties that still see high numbers of traffic deaths caused by alcohol-impaired drivers. This is part of the reason we so avidly support MADD in their mission to do away with drunk driving in the state during the holidays, and throughout the year."
