Glenwood Springs was always destined to be a resort town. Visionary town fathers Isaac Cooper and Walter Devereux understood the uniqueness of the area since its incorporation in 1885. The natural hot springs known by the Ute Indians as “Yampah,” meaning Big Medicine, would become the central attraction in Glenwood Springs. Today it is better known as the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool. Hot springs steam also fills the Yampah Spa & Vapor Caves. And high above the Colorado River, the combination of water and porous rock was responsible for the creation of a labyrinth of underground caves dubbed in the early days as the Fairy Caves, which is now a part of Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park.
In addition to these old favorites still in operation today, Glenwood Springs’ natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities make it an ideal four-season vacation spot. Glenwood Springs is situated at the junction of two rivers, the Colorado and the Roaring Fork, offering both world-class kayaking and river rafting. The river flows through scenic Glenwood Canyon where steep cliffs are home to wildlife including Colorado’s famous big horn sheep; a 16-mile winding path with three rest areas makes the entire canyon accessible by bike, car or raft. In winter, Sunlight Mountain Resort is the place skiers and riders return year after year for pristine conditions and a relaxed atmosphere.
January is just the beginning of a year filled with festivities that will celebrate 125 years of Glenwood Springs, from 1885 to 2010. Check http://www.visitglenwood.com often for more offers and promotions as Glenwood Springs celebrates its history, hot springs, and much more all year long.
