CampingSurvival.com is issuing reminders to its customers and more than 50,000 Facebook fans that the importance of emergency preparedness is underscored by the massive Waldo Canyon, Colorado wildfire near Colorado Springs. At last report, the wildfire had consumed more than 16,000 acres of dry forest and forced the evacuation of more than 32,000 residents.

"Our hearts go out to the people affected by the Colorado wildfires," said Tom Sciacca, President of CampingSurvival.com. "The magnitude of destruction is beyond comprehension and our prayers are with the firefighters that they remain safe and are able to bring the blaze under control."

Many Americans are accustomed to hearing about wildfires in California, but may not realize how many places they actually occur, Sciacca noted. In situations where a family must evacuate quickly, a "go bag" is absolutely essential.

A go bag contains supplies such as food, water, first aid and other items that enable families to get out of their homes quickly in the even of a natural disaster or civil emergecy. Sciacca explained that during these situations, families will have to fend for themselves for at least a little while without assistance from agencies such as the Red Cross.

Each go bag from CampingSurvival.com includes food, water and essential items, designed to keep users self-sufficient during the peak of disaster situations when help may not be available:

  • 1 backpack, such as the Rothco Deluxe Waterproof Nylon Day Pack
  • 6 Meals Ready to Eat
  • 6 MRE heaters
  • Survival blanket
  • Emergency rain poncho
  • G.I. style aluminum canteen cup
  • Energy bar
  • Personal hygiene kit
  • Mini first aid kit
  • Hand powered flashlight
  • Chow set

MRE are military rations, which are precooked, sealed and designed to stay fresh for at least 5 years. They are available in a wide range of flavors and are much tastier than the old C-rations that many military veterans remember. The MRE are not just entrees, but full meals, including side dishes, dessert, crackers, spread and coffee.

Sciacca, a former Marine and veteran of the 1991 Gulf War, launched CampingSurvival.com in 2002, and quickly earned a reputation as an online authority on camping and wilderness survival gear, creating a loyal following of customers. The company has expanded its focus to included urban survival after natural disasters and civil emergencies, such as the Colorado wildfires.
