Approach of Halloween, Oíche Shamhna, Mischief Night, and All Souls' Eve makes for timely release to combat Zombie VM and other mischief in virtualized environments.

Zombie VMs are never good

VKernel, the number-one provider of capacity management products for virtualized data centers, today announced a new whitepaper to combat the scourge of Zombie VMs. Throughout the virtualized world, Halloween marks a period of increased Zombie VM activity. This timely white paper combined with VKernel’s Optimization Pack is designed to assist system administrators in beating back this menace.

Zombie VMs are virtual machines that operate like living virtual machines but do no useful work. They can be created en masse in QA environments, in private clouds, or by overworked system administrators who lose track of provisioned VMs. Zombie VMs hurt data center ROI by consuming valuable CPU, memory and storage in addition to tying up software licenses. Potential Zombies reveal themselves with a low, constant resource utilization that is difficult to spot by a system administrator’s eye alone.

Zombie VMs are not the only wasteful resources in the datacenter that need to be exposed and cleaned up. Abandoned virtual machine images, powered off virtual machines, old snapshots and templates also conspire to rob datacenter teams of CPU, memory and storage resources.

VKernel’s new whitepaper, “Throwing out the Virtual Waste” walks through how waste and Zombie VMs are created in virtual environments. For system administrators that want to put the concepts described in the whitepaper into action, VKernel Optimization Pack 2.0, part of the Award-Winning Capacity Management Suite, can catch the toughest of this year’s living dead virtual machines.

“Zombie VMs are never good,” said Bryan Semple, Chief Marketing Office for VKernel. “But at this time of year they can be especially bad. The release of our new whitepaper combined with Optimization Pack can help system administrators put the boomstick on any storage-sucking Zombie in their virtual environment.”
