Shanthikumar Chilumula, producer and writer-director, produced a movie earlier in one of the Indian languages, has won many accolades and honors. The film bagged Sate Govt. of India's (A.P) Bronze Award for the best feature film of the year 2001. Inspired by the success and Shanthikumar reeled out another successful venture on contemporary cross-cultural related issues.

"On the Other Side" is a love story served with a flavor of adventure dipped in a classy mess of cultural understanding-misunderstandings, perfectly garnished with toppings of hilarious incidental-accidents, which makes it an all-round entertainer. As if the story by Shanthikumar isn't enough, Katie Torpey, a well-known Hollywood screenwriter (The Perfect Man-A Universal Studios release, 2005), excellently brought out the delicious comedy and underlying drama. The present times cross-over phenomena has presented an opportunity for everyone involved in this project to delve deep into the traditions, basics and beyond. Although always the cross-cultural related issues brings with them a certain amount of tension, toughness, sensitivity and possessiveness -- the subject has been presented in a style that is both humoristic and realistic without demeaning the values associated with respective domiciles.

The film completed its principal photography in New York, New Jersey, City of Hyderabad (India) and its surrounding beautiful countryside locales. The choice of locations becomes obvious as they are not only best suited for the subject and due to the fact that both cities have an aura of their own. The cities are 6,000 miles apart with traditions and heritages of their own. Apart from the grandeur, radiance that each city presents and differs in vibrancies both cities are very lively and charismatic in their own terms. Hyderabad city is unique in its own way of dealing with foreigners -- namely Americans. In his or her version -- to most of them -- every foreigner is an American. And hence follows the royal treatment. Mostly people are very patient and behave relatively normal even under 110 degrees temperatures.

The sudden impact of getting introduced to a foreign culture creates both anxiety and confusion and the following behavioral drama of trying to blend in as fast as they can results in hysterical consequences. The sudden jump from an upscale and free-style environment into a conservative and rule-binding family oriented environment presents Dave, the protagonist of the film, a challenge and an opportunity to become aware of the significance of the cultural ground-roots in shaping thoughts about love and compassion. As the story glides slowly but swiftly through scene-to-scene, Dave finds himself more and more drawn towards the traditions and value systems as it provides a sense of security.

SYNOPSIS:
This is a romantic comedy film with romance between an American boy (Dave) and Indian girl (Swapna), who are from entirely different cultural backgrounds. As a major part of their curriculum, Dave, along with his Indian American friend Jack, tasked to do a documentary on Indian culture. After going to India, Dave is overwhelmed by the seemingly chaotic conditions, the living styles and the cultural heritage he sees there, yet he is gradually drawn towards Indian culture and falls in love with Rao's daughter, Swapna.

What happens when Swapna and her parents realize that an American wants to be a part of their family? Is it possible to reconcile the distinct cultures and bridge the barriers? These issues are further complicated with a classic Shakespearian romantic twist and the rest of the story deals with these in a humorous way.

STORY LINE:
Two film school students, Dave and Jack, decide to shoot a documentary on Indian culture in India. Dave, a young American, is all about girls and adventures. His classmate is Jaya Krishna (want to be called himself Jack) is an Indian American. Even though Jack doesn't like the idea of filming the documentary in India, he agrees upon Dave's insistence.

They stay with Rao, Sarala and their daughter Swapna, who helps them film their documentary on Indian culture. Initially even though people, culture and circumstances drive Dave crazy, since meeting Swapna, Dave's attitude takes a U-turn, and he starts falling in love with her. They take a little tour to a village where Swapna introduces them beautiful countryside and a very loving village folk. Dave loves the purity of the village life, the colorful glory of the festivals and the surprising typical aspects of life -- On the other side. Thanks to documentary project, Dave falls in love instantly without even being aware of it.

When things seem to be running pretty smooth, suddenly Swapna gets engaged with someone else. Coming to know about Dave's love with Swapna, his grandma enters the scene to discuss their wedding with Swapna's parents. The hysterical consequences follow as parents of Swapna, who are against Dave getting married to her. The story runs with bumper-to-bumper edgy clashes and arrives at a climax. It's a little bit crazy out there ... but it's really cool.

The film "On the other side" is a well-balanced blend of comedy and drama and provides a wholesome family entertainment that everyone will love to watch.
