With this one project, we are tripling the amount of solar power used by San Francisco's local government and powering up California's largest municipal solar array.

Bay Area commercial electrical contractor BASS Electric announced today the completion of the Sunset Reservoir Solar Project. As the general contractor, BASS Electric managed the design and installation of Advanced Energy inverters and nearly 28,000 Suntech photovoltaic (PV) modules that convert sunlight to usable energy. It is the largest solar PV system in California, and the largest municipal installation in the country.

The twelve-acre 5 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) system was installed on top of Sunset Reservoir, the largest reservoir in San Francisco. Due to its unique placement atop nearly 12 acres of the reservoir's delicate lid, all module and racking components were fabricated on site and carefully rolled into position.

The project significantly increases San Francisco's utilization of renewable energy and lowers dependence on the electric grid. With the addition of this installation, the total municipal solar power generated in San Francisco has more than tripled from the former 2 MW to 7 MW today.

“This project is one of the biggest steps that San Francisco has made towards being a ‘green city,’” said Jeffrey Yee, owner of BASS Electric. “These panels are helping the city reduce its carbon footprint.”

Over the 25-year life of the project, the system will reduce carbon emissions by more than 109,000 metric tons. Its impact is equivalent to taking more than 1,000 typical San Francisco residences off the grid. The project also created dozens of “green collar” jobs in the city, the majority of whom are San Francisco residents.

The San Francisco Public Utility Commission will use the clean energy generated at Sunset Reservoir to offset various load-demanding facilities across the City of San Francisco. Estimated annual energy production is 6,300 megawatt hours.

"With this one project, we are tripling the amount of solar power used by San Francisco's local government and powering up California's largest municipal solar array," said Mayor Newsom. "San Francisco is leading by example towards California's future of green jobs and a growing economy built on renewable energy and a cleaner environment."
