Yet another healthy reason to remain active was reported today in the British Journal of Sports Medicine by researchers out of Appalachian State University. Daily exercise reduces the risk and intensity of the common cold. TrekDesk treadmill desks offer employees an opportunity to stay active throughout the day and avoid this common malaise.

The 3 month study, following 1,002 adults, found that those exercising five days a week suffered cold symptoms 43% fewer days of the year. Not surprisingly those who rated themselves as highly fit had an almost exact amount of fewer sick days reported due to colds. When the study was adjusted for sex, age, level of education, marital status, body mass index, mental stress levels, and fruit intake, individuals reporting the most physical activity reported less occurrences of upper respiratory tract infections than those who exercised the least.

According to lead researcher David Nieman "Although the immune system returns to pre-exercise levels within a few hours after the exercise session is over, each session may improve immuno-surveillance against pathogens that reduce overall upper respiratory tract infection incidence and symptomatology."

“This study adds to the growing body of medical evidence that continual movement throughout the day is essential to maintaining and restoring health,” stated TrekDesk CEO Steve Bordley.
