The era of the individual-centric social network may be coming to a close, or at least that’s what the founders of the world’s first Community Networking site are asserting. With OurPangea, Noah Simon and Ari Franklin hope to inspire social good and unite communities across the globe by applying the benefits of group collaboration to the social networking model. The private release of OurPangea is scheduled for early May 2012.

“Current social networks emphasize us as an individual, not as an individual part of the whole," says Simon. “When we only look at ourselves, we quickly lose touch with the world around us. Aside from the fact that social networks are only made for being 'online social,' they also fail to inform us of our environment. The concept of community or belonging is obscured by social networks. That’s why we're building the first Community Network, to revitalize community and help each of us find new ways to be connected to the people and area around us – either the people we know or want to meet."

As a platform, OurPangea allows members to see what their community is involved in, what it is creating, and—over time—what it has done. It seeks to create a virtual gathering place for groups of people to meet, to congregate, and to stay in touch. OurPangea is a place for students to work together on projects, eventually for businesses of any size to reach out to their customers, and in the end to allow people to spend time together collaborating.

“The potential of this system is undeniable,” Franklin says. “Social networks have done a great job of connecting people one-on-one, but that becomes restrictive because they’re only built around the individual. We want OurPangea and Community Networking to help bring online networking to the next level and improve the way we connect, collaborate and interact with our communities.”

The platform’s private release will be invite only and available to a few test markets, where the founders plan to stay highly involved. Beyond an upcoming launch, the startup has additional features scheduled to roll out through 2012, including project management tools, mobile apps and a robust, customizable ad placement system for businesses to use. There’s a lot more on the horizon for OurPangea and, its founders believe, the world.
