Compassion International announces the appointment of Rev. Dr. Laurent Mbanda, Bishop of the Shyira Diocese of Rwanda, to Compassion's Global Board of Directors, commencing in June.
“It is an honor and privilege to be appointed to serve on the Board of Compassion International,” says Bishop Mbanda. “My childhood experience in poverty-stricken refugee camps and settlements, extensive travel and work experience will serve me well. I have lived the kind of life Compassion-assisted children live. My life has been changed through the love and support of caring individuals, as well as churches similar to those who partner with Compassion International.”
Bishop Mbanda worked for Compassion International for 17 years in a variety of leadership roles before leaving his post as Vice President of the Africa Region in 2010 to be consecrated as a bishop in the Anglican Church of Rwanda.
“Compassion’s ministry is continuing to expand its reach to help the neediest of children, and the needs in Africa are immense,” said Compassion International President, Wess Stafford. “Bishop Mbanda is a Godly man who speaks on behalf of the poor with wisdom, dignity and integrity. I’m thrilled to welcome him to our board and know we will benefit greatly from his vast professional and personal experiences.”
At the early age of four years old, Bishop Mbanda and his parents fled his native country of Rwanda to escape extreme injustice and ethnic war. For the remainder of his youth, he was raised in a refugee settlement in Burundi where he witnessed the hardships of the children of Africa first hand and quickly began working on their behalf.
Bishop Mbanda's early ministry service includes work with Campus Crusade, International Students Incorporated, and Christian Aid Mission. He is also the founder of Christian African Leadership Ministries (CALM), an organization that provides leadership and vocational training for Christian leaders on the African continent. Bishop Mbanda also sits on the board of International Justice Mission.
Bishop Mbanda holds a Master's degree in Christian Education from Denver Seminary and a Ph.D. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He and his wife Chantal were married in 1984 and have ministered together in the countries of Burundi, Kenya, Congo, Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania.
