Carbon fiber industry predictions indicate several years of supply that will exceed the anticipated demand, giving growing opportunity to the premier manufacturer and designer of 3 axis & 5 axis machine centers and CNC routers, Diversified Machine Systems (DMS), to reach composite industry suppliers. As the carbon fiber industry expands, parts manufacturers will require OEM equipment that consistently maintains continuity of high-speed operations with a rapid ROI, of which DMS excels!

A recent article published by CompositesWorld on the outlook of the carbon fiber industry fortified Diversified Machine Systems’ (DMS) position as the premier manufacturer of 3 axis & 5 axis CNC routers and machine centers for accuracy and quality for the composites industry’s expanding requirements.

The publication, released in March, recapped presentations from the CompositesWorld Carbon Fiber Conference providing insight on the supply and demand forecast of the industry. Chris Red, Principal of Composites Forecasts & Consulting LLC (Mesa, AZ) predicted that the composites industry will experience several years where the carbon fiber supply will exceed demand, beginning in 2016. The change is attributed to the increased efficiency of carbon fiber production and the growing number of suppliers in the marketplace.

Carbon fiber is becoming more prevalent in automotive component manufacturing, and several processes in the works could move carbon fiber into high-volume use for mainstream vehicles. The industry is paying particular attention to the BMW i3 electric car, due out in late 2012, which features a revolutionary carbon fiber passenger cell. According to experts, this application has the potential to be as large as aerospace for carbon fiber, if not larger.

Even if this prediction is overstimated, parts manufacturers will still require a robust, high-speed process with a cycle time of just a few minutes, in order to produce carbon fiber automotive structures as needed. Suppliers who hope to remain competitive are looking for machining equipment that can process autoclave or out-of-autoclave thermosets, as well as automate fabric preforming, molding and finishing.

With more suppliers entering the arena, DMS expects to see sales to composites manufactures continue to climb. DMS 3 axis and 5 axis CNC routers and machining centers are already used extensively in the composites industry because of the wide selection of tools available that provide tighter tolerances and the best surface quality. Composites manufacturers have also cited machine value as a key reason for selecting a DMS router over other options. DMS is positioned to meet this need for flexibility, with their line of custom CNC routers, which can be engineered to address a variety of applications and requirements.

“The CompositesWorld report reinforces our projections and business indicators for the industry and associated vertical markets,” noted Ed Hilligrass, V.P. of Sales for DMS. “DMS is pleased to be an essential part of continued growth in this sector as high-volume composites manufacturing continues to expand over the coming years.”

Growth in this market looks promising for Diversified Machine Systems, as producers of carbon fiber parts and components continue to seek equipment that will provide a rapid return on investment, and allow them to maintain their high-speed operations without sacrificing on product quality.
