EUGENE, Ore. (PRWEB) April 16, 2012
Concentric Sky today released Viewer for Khan Academy, a free application that brings more than 2,700 educational videos to Android tablet users. Students, teachers and life-long learners can use Viewer to download and view Khan Academy’s entire library of math, science, humanities, finance and economics lessons.
Viewer for Khan Academy is available at Google Play, and is compatible with Android tablets running 3.0 (Honeycomb) or later. Users can download videos and playlists for offline viewing, control video playback using transcripts, and track their learning history through Khan Academy’s website.
The app was developed at cost to Concentric Sky after the release of Khan Academy’s official iPad app. Shantanu Sinha, Khan Academy’s president and chief operating officer, said the two companies worked together to ensure the app takes advantage of Khan Academy’s latest features.
"We're excited that Concentric Sky has graciously created an unofficial Android version of the Khan Academy iPad app, and we thank them for making this available to Android tablet users on the heels of the release of our iPad app," Sinha said.
Cale Bruckner, Concentric Sky’s vice president of technology, said the company developed Viewer because it supports Khan Academy’s mission to democratize education.
"Our roots are in the education technology space, and we believe strongly in what the team at Khan Academy is trying to accomplish. Building Viewer for Khan Academy was our way of supporting the Khan Academy and saying thanks. Ownership of the code will be transferred to Khan Academy, and possibly incorporated into a future official version,” he said.
Bruckner added that John Resig and the rest of the Khan Academy team were a great help during development. Viewer for Khan Academy utilizes some of the same code from the Khan Academy iPad app.
A leading mobile education software developer, Concentric Sky also developed the official Encyclopaedia Britannica app and the Britannica Kids series, for iPad and iPhone, and National Geographic’s GeoBee app for iPad, iPhone and Android.
