This is one of the conclusions in Green-in-Print™, a review by conservation photographer Dr Joe Zammit-Lucia in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy. (Download at http://www.jzlimages.com)

Providing a thorough analysis of the environmental friendliness of different papers and other materials used for photographic printing, the review concludes that 100% cotton paper represents the most environmentally friendly choice.

A Green-in-Print™ rating scale is provided allowing manufacturers to rate their papers on a scale from 0 to 5 trees according to their environmental friendliness. On this scale, 100% cotton papers are rated as the most desirable (5 trees), while C-Prints and other plastics achieve the lowest scores (0 trees).

“We hear a lot of talk about museums and galleries all claiming to be ‘green,’” says Dr Zammit-Lucia. “This review will allow them to make more informed choices when printing and choosing photographs for exhibition or sale.”

The review urges manufacturers to move beyond general statements about environmental policies towards clear product labeling. Manufacturers are invited to use the Green-in-Print™ rating scale.

“Most manufacturers are nowadays very keen to improve the environmental impact of their products,” says Fran Price, Director of Forest Certification Programs at The Nature Conservancy. “This review can help them improve their environmental performance.”
