APS Fulfillment, Inc. (http://www.APSFulfillment.com), one of the nation’s leading cost-effective fulfillment and integrated direct mail marketing companies, is weighing in on improving consumer confidence levels in the United States and the importance of brands meeting the growing demand for their products and avoiding costly “stockouts.” A stockout is when a company’s inventory runs out.
The Conference Board recently announced that March consumer confidence levels increased to 82.3 from 78.1 in February; analysts had forecast consumer confidence levels to rise marginally to 78.7. The March consumer confidence data is the first reading above 82 since June 2013 and the highest reading since January 2008. “Consumer confidence levels jumped in March to the highest levels since the recession as Americans become more positive about the country’s short-term outlook,” says Charles Aultman, president of APS Fulfillment, Inc. “For an economy that gets roughly 70% of its growth from consumer spending, these are encouraging results for American businesses.”
Aultman explains that as the economy ramps up, businesses that use warehousing and fulfillment companies will have to consider whether or not to hold more stock or inventory to meet potential customer demand. While keeping products on the shelf can be an added cost for some businesses, not having enough product in stock can damage a brand’s reputation.
One of the main issues for a brand being out of stock, Aultman adds, is that their product could be replaced by a substitute product or by another manufacturer. While consumers are more loyal to certain brands and types of products, the fact remains that a stockout will result in a loss of revenue.
“Over the years, warehousing and fulfillment has evolved from being a long-term storage facility to a high-throughput distribution facility,” he concludes. “That’s why it’s important for brands to ensure their fulfillment company has the proper inventory control systems in place: systems that can help improve distribution, inventory management, and shipping.”
