International Credit Union Day provides a great opportunity to thank Members for their business, share a little credit union history and discuss the value credit unions have to offer
Waukegan, IL (Vocus) October 6, 2009
Thursday, October 15, 2009, is International Credit Union Day ... a time to reflect on why the movement was founded and how the general public benefits. In that spirit, Consumers Credit Union (CCU; $530 M. Waukegan, IL) invites everyone - Members and non-members alike - to help celebrate this special occasion. Credit Union management and Board Members of the Member-owned credit union will greet guests at all six (6) CCU locations.
The credit union movement was founded on the principles of providing important benefits and assistance to Members. The movement began in Germany in the 1800s and quickly spread to North America - first to Canada, then the USA. The first US credit union was in Manchester, New Hampshire. Today credit union Membership has grown to approximately 90 million people in the USA alone.
A need gradually emerged to establish an annual occasion to celebrate the positive impact credit unions make on the lives of Members. By 1948, America's credit union leaders felt strongly enough about this notion to set aside a day to bring Members together. As a result, two national organizations - Credit Union National Association and CUNA Mutual Insurance Society - set the third Thursday of October to commemorate the cooperative history of credit unions and the many benefits available for Members.
"International Credit Union Day provides a great opportunity to thank Members for their business, share a little credit union history and discuss the value credit unions have to offer," noted Sean M. Rathjen, CCU President. "Consumers Credit Union is proud to join this annual celebration and invite you to stop by, meet our management team, grab a free gift and enjoy some treats. We'll be happy to explain why we proclaim, 'We're a credit union, not a bank. Ask us the difference!'"
CCU celebrates the occasion from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm at its six branches. For more information about Credit Union Day, please contact Sean M. Rathjen, CCU President, at 847.782.4670.
