Singapore's Legal Hub Status Gets a Boost

New measures introduced to strengthen Singapore's legal services sector.

Singapore (PRWEB) June 2, 2009 -- Singapore's status as a legal services hub for the region received a boost from the introduction of a host of new measures that aims to strengthen the country's legal infrastructure and enhance the growth of the industry.

Recently, Singapore introduced the Qualifying Foreign Law Practice Scheme which provides licenses to foreign law practices to practice Singapore law through Singapore-qualified solicitors employed by them. This initiative has since brought six foreign heavyweight firms to Singapore's shores, contributing to the vibrancy of the sector.

To develop strong arbitration capability and become a venue of choice for international arbitration in the region, Singapore has established the world's first integrated dispute resolution complex, Maxwell Chambers, which is scheduled to open by August 2009 and will house top arbitral institutes like the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to these efforts, Singapore is reviewing its intellectual property laws and regime with the aim of becoming a regional IP education and training hub to develop skilled IP professionals, while revamping the criteria for admission to the Singapore bar to meet the demand for high-caliber legal professionals.

A national data bank, known as the Singapore Geospatial Collaborative Environment, is also being developed to serve as an information exchange for both the public and private sectors.

These initiatives will improve the quality and depth of legal services in Singapore, especially in the growth areas of commercial litigation, corporate work and intellectual property. The growing demand for lawyers extends beyond the legal profession and includes in-house counsels in local and foreign firms as well as multinational corporations.
