Researchers compared medication adherence among veterans with hypertension or diabetes at four Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Centers after a rise in the copay for prescription drugs was implemented. Patient adherence was compared between two groups. One group had to pay an increased copay, and one group had no copay. Those patients with the copays, and increased copays, had a greater propensity to use lesser amounts of their medications, and in general lesser adherence to doctor prescribed protocols.
This study is a perfect example of the importance of prescribing Physicians having full knowledge of what types of drugs, be they Generic or Brand, can best fit into their patients needs. This has always been quite a challenge. Physicians have been bombarded with the availability of thousands of drugs. It is not realistic to think they could be aware of all the data about all of the drugs, such as which ones have an available discount.
With the introduction of a Free Mobile App called The “CoPay” Mobile App, things are improving.
The choice is either Generic or Branded. Physicians must keep in mind that it is a proven fact that the Branded variety have repeatedly been proven to be safer and more effective, and may be a better choice as being the result of the latest technology and treatments.
It is now a simple matter for a Physician to conduct a search through the database of over 1600 Discounted Medications in order to select the drug that best suits the patients needs. The “CoPay” Mobile App is available in both Android and iPhone/iPad Platforms. Now Physicians can check to see which medications will be available to their patients based on their individual financial capabilities. There is also a Discount Prescription Card included with the App, and is good at participating pharmacies. Patients receive the discounts either in the form of a discount on existing Co-Pays, or applied directly to the cash purchase price directly from the Pharmaceutical Companies.
The doctor behind this new App is Sandeep Grewal, M.D., and the developer of this new App was Myo Sandar Nwe, BE. Dr. Grewal is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. Dr. Grewal was given an Innovation in Healthcare Award 2013 by The Charlotte Business Journal, who also named him to the Top Forty under Forty List. Dr. Grewal has over 10 years of experience in medicine and technology, and is a Board Member of several reputable hospitals and technology companies. He is also well-known as a noted Author and Inventor.
