The game of cornhole has been elevated to the sport of cornhole with the efforts of the American Cornhole Organization. By standardizing cornhole boards, bags, and cornhole rules the ACO has changed the game of cornhole to the sport of cornhole in two short years.

American Cornhole Organization, located in Milford, Ohio, had a vision just a few years ago to elevate the backyard game of cornhole to the Sport of Cornhole. It seems their vision is on track to do just that.

Over the past two years the American Cornhole Organization, the ACO, has developed the foundation of a Professional Cornhole Tour referred to as the ACO-PRO Tour. In 2007 the ACO had eight recognized players with "SCR" scores or skill sets good enough to be considered professional level cornhole players. These players represented four states; Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Illinois. One year later the ACO now recognizes twenty-five ACO-PRO players in the ACO data base along with sixty other players ranking at the semi-pro level. Now the ACO-PRO players represent ten states across the US. The American Cornhole Organization has professionally ranked cornhole players in; Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. The list of amateur ranked players has more than tripled since 2007 and the ACO membership has grown more than 300% in 2008.

The game of cornhole has been around for years. In the beginning most Cornhole Game Sets were homemade with no real standard in board size, board angle, board surface preparation, bag fabric, or bag content weight. In order for the game to be considered a sport, this all had to change. Frank Geers, President of the American Cornhole Organization, knew that certain standards would need to be set. With the help of the regions best cornhole players, cornhole boards were designed and finished with defined standards, cornhole bags were standardized making them with a specified fabric and filled to a certain weight. From these standards, the Official ACO Sanctioned American Cornhole Tournament Series Cornhole Set was born.

ACO Official Sport of Cornhole Rules were fine tuned and agreed to by these same upper level players so that the sport had standard cornhole rules as well. Combining Official Sport of Cornhole Rules with Official Sport of Cornhole Game Products assured the upper level players that when they played in an ACO Sanctioned Cornhole Tournament that the rules and hardware would always be the same. Now the players can work on their game skills without the concern of differing rules or equipment inconsistencies. Each year in January, the ACO Executive Board reviews the rules and equipment, just as any professional sport does, to assure the best in cornhole sport playing.

The efforts to standardize the sport has been a real lift to the game of cornhole and to the sport of cornhole giving both added exposure. The sport of cornhole has received National attention with the various Sanctioned Cornhole Tournaments that have taken place across the country. Any tournament that is a sanctioned ACO cornhole tournament will have standardized boards and bags that are the same specifications whether the cornhole tournament is in Cleveland or San Diego.

American Cornhole has a series of tournaments, called the American Cornhole Master Series, in various parts of the United States, that allow the player to qualify for the King of Cornhole Tournament held in Las Vegas, Nevada in January of each year. The AC Master Series runs at specific times of the year; IceholeClassic (February), Cornhole De Mayo (May), MaizeKraze (July), CornholeClassic (September), and the TurkeyHoleClassic (November).

The ACO has it's own website AmericanCornhole.org that is an information source for the governing body of cornhole. It is a cornhole aficionado hangout. Not only does it offer Cornhole Pro Rankings, current Tournament and League play, but includes Free downloads of Cornhole Bracket Information to help support local tournaments and leagues. You can even catch a video of a past Pro Tournament, or view the trailer of Cornhole: The Movie.

The game of cornhole is taking the country by storm and American Cornhole Organization is making sure the sport of cornhole is right there with it.
