Interestingly, men were the harshest critics, guessing around 1.5 years older than women in the same group.

1000 Australian men and women participated in a study conducted by Australian cosmetic enhancement website Costhetics (http://www.costhetics.com.au) together with Dr Marcells, current President of the Australasian Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery (http://www.drmarcells.com.au).

Participants of the study were broken into two groups. One group was shown a “before” photo of one of Dr Marcells’ patients and asked to estimate her age, while the other group was shown an “after” photo of the same patient.

The median age guessed from the “after” group was 50 – seven years younger than the patient’s actual age of 57. The median age guessed for the group shown the “before” photo was 55.

Interestingly, men were the harshest critics, guessing around 1.5 years older than women in the same group.

Statistical analysis shows that the difference between the two groups was significant; the probability of arriving at the same results by chance was less than 0.00003% (p-value).

The patient used in the study had a combination of procedures including a deep plane facelift, brow lift and upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).
