LibertyBell Law Group’s Executive Managing Attorney, Gina Tennen, teamed up with Garrick Byers, a Senior Defense Attorney at the Fresno County Public Defenders’ office, and author of a treatise on Public Safety Realignment. Together, at the Beverly Hills Bar Association Conference Center, they made it possible for California’s defense attorneys to become familiar with new dramatic and historic changes to California criminal and sentencing laws.
During the event, Byers gave an in-depth analysis of the new dramatic changes to California sentencing laws affecting criminals and the way defense attorneys negotiate and resolve cases. The new laws named A.B. (Assembly Bill) 109, 116, 117, 118 and 17 are commonly referred to as “realignment.” Many politicians and news commentators see the new changes not only as a response to reduce California’s prison population not justified by violent crime rates but also to reduce the state’s severe budget crisis.
Feedback and reviews after the event showed it was a huge success, as it was highly rated by peers and the criminal law profession. The goal of educating other defense attorneys on criminal law sentencing as well as how to achieve good results and provide the best defense for their clients was met. Attorney Tennen is a passionate advocate for civil rights and smarter criminal law sentencing and reform.
Gina Tennen, a top defense attorney, says, “Organizing this event was an honor and I am proud to be a part of the era of historical change to criminal justice reform that’s sweeping the nation and causing smarter decisions, especially affecting those accused of criminal acts. I hope this event was also able to provide encouragement to defense attorneys struggling daily with their client’s individual concerns, needs, or treatment.”
