In the old days, when wineries wanted input on a new product, they might turn to family, friends, and focus groups.

Swanson Vineyards in Napa Valley, however, took a bold, innovative approach recently, becoming the first major wine brand in America to crowd-source a wine label from their online community.

“Help is Here” was selected as the winning name for their new proprietary blend red wine, picked from more than 8,000 submissions and released Aug. 1. The wine joins the line of Swanson Vineyards’ popular Modern House Wines, with equally clever labels such as “Merci” and “Please Forgive Me”.

The winning entrant received dinner for eight in Swanson Vineyards' elegant Salon hosted by Alexis Swanson Traina.

Innovation is a hallmark of the Swanson family. The name is perhaps best known for making history in 1953 with the first production of the now ubiquitous frozen TV dinner and other convenience foods. Today, the winery is credited for being among the first in the United States to elevate what used to be rudimentary wine tasting experiences to high-end appointment-only tastings in luxury surroundings.

Yet even Swanson Vineyards creative director Alexis Swanson Traina admits surprise at how hot the crowd-sourcing idea proved to be. Many members of the winery’s enthusiastic online community offered multiple ideas, and even photoshopped draft labels onto bottles.

Picking a winner challenged the community vote, with such strong contenders as "Red Flag", "It's Time"', "5:00 Somewhere", "Occupy This", and "Kitchen Floor" which were posted on the Swanson Vineyards blog leading up to the final announcement.

The dedication of Swanson’s fan base portends that “Help is Here” won’t actually be here for too long, however. The inaugural release of just 100 cases will be first offered to the crowd that helped source its name, and at $25 a bottle, it is expected to sell out quickly.
