The Institute For Shipboard Education and are partnering to Offer Volunteer “Leadership Positions” to assist service learning projects helping children in need in Guatemala and Nicaragua during a Panama Canal Cruise December 15, 2010.

The Institute for Shipboard Education is offering an opportunity for travelers to play a leadership role in setting up their service learning projects “Helping Children in Need” program. Nobel Laureates Mother Teresa and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have honored previous ISE activities with their presence and involvement.

Many people found their hearts ached wanting to help with the recent natural disaster in Haiti, yet were unable to go there and help without adding to the burden there. This program will take travelers to ports in Central America where they can make a true difference and feel good about how they spent their time there.

During this Panama Canal voyage passengers will be working with the local communities, social workers, hospital and orphanage administrators to service learning projects helping children in need.

The program will offer cruisers on this line the ability to meet and interact with local children in the cities and villages the ship visits. Here are some of the program activities travelers can help develop for future guests who want to assist with service learning projects helping children in need:

Determine what role cruisers can fill with the children; such as read or tell stories, demonstrate hobbies or play games, teach or help with meal preparation, how to cultivate a garden, and how to help with laundry or general cleaning.
