We have a viewing atrium where passers-by can see onto the manufacturing floor
Port Washington, WI (Vocus) July 11, 2009
It all started with an innocent inquiry to Brenda Depies in customer service at Allen Edmonds and ended with a private tour with the CEO featured on askandyaboutclothes.com. Gerard Toohey wanted a pair of custom shoes, the Allen Edmonds' double monkstrap Mora in merlot. On second thought, wouldn't it be nice to see the shoes being made? A note to fellow member of the askandyaboutclothes.com forum, Allen Edmonds' CEO Paul Grangaard, was whisked off, requesting a tour to shadow his custom shoes as they were being made. The response was swift, ''Absolutely. We would love to have you.'' Toohey and his son were on their way to Port Washington, WI.
"We have a viewing atrium where passers-by can see onto the manufacturing floor," said Colin Hall, chief marketing officer at Allen Edmonds. "We love to show off our cobblers' skills and to demonstrate the steps required in crafting our classic American shoes."
The father/son team was greeted at reception and escorted to meet Brenda, Toohey's customer service representative. She came bearing the paperwork for the shoes and the uppers of the custom shoes, which were dubbed "turtles" by the Tooheys for obvious reasons from the photo of the nascent pair posted on the forum. They did, indeed, follow the custom shoes through the manufacturing process and posted photos at every step.
