Vector Marketing & Cutco Work Experience Profiled in Wall Street Journal Article

OLEAN, N.Y. (Business Wire EON/PRWEB ) August 26, 2008 -- With summer jobs and paid internships scarce for college students, one company is offering a unique and valuable work experience, according to a recent story in the Wall Street Journal, titled Summer Job: Nice Pay, if You Can Cut It.

The article profiled Cutco Cutlery, the largest kitchen cutlery manufacturer in North America, and its sales division, Vector Marketing. The 60-year-old company sells products through a national network of college students, who sell through in-home personal demonstrations.

According to the article, the company trains approximately 40,000 students a year, providing them with valuable skills that serve them well in future careers.

Derek Kernus, a sales rep from Virginia, said, Ive done very well with this job. Ive made enough to pay my bills and save for school.

The article focused on how this sales training prepares students for other careers.

You're constantly being put in a situation where you have to meet new people everyday, Kernus explained in the article. "It's like practicing a sport. You keep being put in this situation and you learn how to be more social.

"You see how much rejection you can take and how you handle it with this type of job," he explains. "It's a skill for life because people aren't going to say yes all the time. You need to try and come back with something different to try and get a yes."

The value of this real-world experience is noticed by hiring managers with major companies, according to the article.

The article quoted Marie Artim, assistant vice president for recruiting at Enterprise Rent-A-Car: Weve found that the job can give people the things we look for. Things like communication skills, discipline and a work ethic, knowledge of customer service, sales and marketing, and the ability to work on your own.
