Dahn Yoga Instructors Show Fairfax County Teachers the Benefits of Mind Body Programs

Dahn Yoga instructors from the Burke, Virginia Dahn Yoga center introduced Dahn Yoga and Brain Education exercises for children to the School Age Child Care teachers of Fairfax County. Several teachers benefited from the class noting that it would be valuable in helping their students develop self-confidence and focus.

Jane Gordon and Carol McLean are Dahn Yoga instructors at the Dahn Yoga Center in Burke, Virginia. They both specialize in teaching yoga classes and mind body exercises for children, mostly from the Brain Education program related to Dahn Yoga. In a lighthearted presentation to the School Age Child Care teachers of Fairfax County, Gordon and McLean discussed how mind body programs can improve the classroom environment.

As part of a "Welcome Back to School Orientation" program for the teachers, these simple methods could be used to benefit students who participate in the after school care centers of the county’s 137 elementary schools. Gordon and McLean demonstrated Dahn Yoga and Brain Education exercises in several 45 minute sessions. Almost 300 teachers had the opportunity to experience Dahn Yoga and Brain Education for themselves. In addition to the stretching movements, flexibility and balance exercises one might normally associate with yoga, the teachers were challenged with coordination and concentration activities. Finally, at the end of each session the teachers enjoyed a relaxing visualization exercise, where they imagined themselves having the best school year ever. They were also asked to picture their students having their best school year ever.

Dahn Yoga benefits, the combination of physical exercises, deep breathing, focusing and relaxation, were quickly realized by the teachers. By the end of each session, the teachers’ relaxation was visible not only on their faces, but in their many positive comments as well. Several believed the class would be valuable in helping their students develop self-confidence and focus.

These teachers realized that adults are not the only people who experience stress. Dahn Yoga and Brain Education exercises can mean positive stress relief for students and a better school environment. This simple workshop helped the teachers take a step toward realizing hopes for their students best year ever.
