Dahn Yoga & Health Centers, Inc. has recently introduced a special video in recognition of the corporation’s fifteen year history in the United States. This Dahn Yoga video offers an inside look at one of the largest yoga businesses in the United States and a leader in health and wellness by sharing the history of the practice and the company it inspired.
Over the years many practitioners have enjoyed Dahn Yoga benefits such as improved flexibility, balance and overall health, but few know the details of its origins and growth. “Dahn” is a Korean word meaning “energy” and Dahn Yoga founder Ilchi Lee recognized that traditional Korean energy principles could help people live healthier lives. Lee began teaching his adaptation of Korean Tao health principles to a recovering stroke victim in a public park in South Korea 1985. News spread of the effectiveness of his teachings and groups of people enjoyed his exercises in the park. What Lee called “Dahnhak” or the “study of energy” expanded beyond the public park to 50 locations in South Korea by 1990.
Because Lee felt that the benefits of what he was teaching should not be limited to his native country, Lee and his students brought the practice to the United States in the 1990s. Starting in the Northeast, “Dahn Centers,” as they were called, began opening in major cities throughout the United States, eventually forming the corporation which became known as Dahn Yoga & Health Centers, Inc. The Dahn Yoga history video recounts the details of the company’s growth and how it continues to foster its founders concern for the community as well as the well-being of individuals.
