The new Santa Cruz/Watsonville dance classes on the stage are: Creative Movement for Kids; Dance Acrobatix for Teens; Pre-Ballet; Adult/Teen Hip-Hop; Pre-School Dance, Music & Art; Adult/Teen Tap; and Beginning Ballet. Classes begin the first week of January, unless otherwise noted, and are subject to cancellation with less than six students. These classes are in addition to classes already available at IAD. The full schedule can be accessed at their website.
New dance instructor Beth Christopher will be holding Creative Movement for Kids on Mondays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for kids ages 5 to 8 and from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for ages 8-10. Classes run for six weeks, from Jan. 27 to Feb. 27, and costs $79. In this class, children will learn what their bodies can do, what strength and energy they have and how to move using time, rhythm, tempo, direction, space, size and level. By enrolling children in this creative dance class, they will learn concentration, to feel respect and will master self-discipline.
Instructor Curtis Caudill will teach Dance Acrobatix for Teens on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Teens will learn to perform extraordinary feats of balance, agility and motor coordination; an excellent supplement to any dance form or athletic pursuit. No experience is required. Safe tumbling lanes with excellent supervision and emphasis on correct form will be used.
Melissa Palumbo will be instructing Pre-Ballet on Tuesdays for ages 3-5 from 10:15 to 11:00 a.m. Young dancers will learn the basic positions and steps of ballet, while creating stories through movement and learning correct movement patterns. The children must be able to focus attentively to the instructor for the full 45 minutes and be able to dance without mom, dad or caregivers in the studio.
For each class, children's monthly tuition applies. Please see the website for details.
Adult/Teen Hip-Hop will be taught on Thursdays at 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and there is an introductory rate of $40 for four classes in January. Hip Hop dance for teens and adults is a fun way to get moving in style, while learning musicality and dance technique. No experience is required. Moves taught are breaking, popping, locking and krumping, but don’t be afraid of improv or interpretation.
Pre-School Dance, Music & Art for 3-5 years is taught on Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to noon starting Jan. 27 and running until March 2 for $130. Storybook themes will be used to engage and delight the budding artist with activities that include dance, music, puppetry and art to encourage imagination. The class culminates with the creation of an original fairy tale and mini-performance for parents and friends on the last day.
Adult/Teen Tap will be held on Fridays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. with an introductory rate of $40 for four classes in January. This mixed level class has something for everyone.
Diana Rose will be instructing Beginning Ballet on Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. with an introductory rate of $40 for four classes in January. This is ballet for the beginning adult student with little or no ballet training. Students will learn ballet terminology and fine tune placement, posture and technique; begin to add arm movements, with leg work, and add a new dimension of coordination when ready to prepare for Beg/Int Ballet.
Melanie Useldinger will now be teaching Adult Beginning Ballet on Fridays from 1:00-2:00 p.m., with an introductory rate of four classes in January for $40. See the description for Beginning Ballet with Diana Rose. Also, try a Zumba class at IAD for $5!
These classes can enhance daily life, whether students go on to be professionals or not.
Just listen to Shirley G, student, “Diana brings her upbeat style of teaching to adults and youth alike. We gain grace and rhythm while improving our posture, and test our limits of strength and balance. All the while we gain confidence, laugh at our lapses, and leave class humming the themes from classical music. Who knew that doing what was good for us could be so much fun? Diana's contagious enthusiasm for the art of ballet is one of Santa Cruz County's best kept secrets.”
"I am so happy that we can be a part of this great dance school that combines excellent technique with such a positive, nurturing attitude and philosophy! Thank you,” said Bari Morgan Miller, a student, mom and grandparent of students at IAD.
