Members of Buchanan & Edwards’ custom application team have recently completed the development and deployment of a custom web-based personnel-tracking database for the Department of State’s diplomatic mission in Afghanistan. Faced with the turbulent environment in Afghanistan, the Department of State found it increasingly difficult to track the location and status of its personnel deployed in Afghanistan. The Department of State’s Near Easter Affairs (NEA) Bureau tasked Buchanan & Edwards with developing a solution that would allow users to organize, update, and query personnel location and status data. Additionally, the NEA Bureau requested that the solution be deployed in less than three months and that the application be accessible through an intuitive web-based interface that would allow for secure access to personnel data at any of the hundreds of State Department locations scattered throughout the country.

Buchanan & Edwards began work on the project immediately, deploying people to Afghanistan to gather requirements and analyze the current data. Through its proven development methodology, Buchanan & Edwards brought the application and database online within two months of the initial request and delivered the final product in three months. The final solution allows users to easily add, update and query personnel data through a custom interface display in their SharePoint websites. It is accessible from anywhere in the world and provides instant insight into the distribution of State Department personnel in Afghanistan.

Today, the system collects and analyzes personnel status and location data originating from over 130 locations in Afghanistan with little maintenance required. This solution allows the Department of State to mitigate risk, respond to emergencies and reduce inefficiency by providing new visibility into previously inaccessible data. Furthermore, Buchanan & Edwards has shown that with a clear methodology and system expertise a robust custom solution can be deployed in a war zone in a relatively small timeframe.
