Ineffective rack airflow management at the rack and row level is a key contributor to aisle and room overheating

Wright Line, outfitting technology intensive environments, today announced Rack Hygiene, a breakthrough classification for data center energy management. The launch of the concept will take place at the Uptime Institute Symposium in Manhattan, May 17-19.

Rack Hygiene describes the care in which the data center rack envelope is designed, controlled and maintained. The Rack Hygiene concept encompasses the identification, analysis and repair of hot air leakage areas/infusion paths and cold air bypass routes within and around individual data center racks.

“Ineffective rack airflow management at the rack and row level is a key contributor to aisle and room overheating,” said Carl Cottuli, data center air flow expert and Wright Line’s Vice President of Product Development and Services. “Rack Hygiene can solve this problem by approaching the rack as part of the airflow management system and setting benchmarked standards for leakage. Regardless of the rack’s dimensions, it‘s incumbent upon the data center professional to employ solutions that create an impenetrable barrier around the front plane of the rack in a front-to-back dominated airflow environment. The tighter the seal provided around the front of the rack – exclusive of a thorough blanking panel strategy – the closer one can come to achieving rack hygiene nirvana."

Mr. Cottuli will also discuss Rack Hygiene during the Uptime Symposium panel on Optimization Drives Data Center Efficiency and Predictability, which discusses the conditions necessary for reliable , predictable data centers, tking place on Tuesday, May 18 ay 2:45 PM, the Hilton, New York, Nassau Room A.
